Early seismicity of the Scottish Borders Region

Abstract
This paper considers the seismicity of Southern Scotland and Northern England up to the year 1750. This area
was formerly a border area between two states that eventually became politically united. Much of the area is uplands,
and the seismicity is moderate to low. This makes for some problems in studying historical seismicity, yet
the area provides a number of case studies of general interest in the field of historical seismology, including a
rare case of being able to track down a «missing» earthquake.
